Addressing a press conference at its Goa headquarters at Vasco port town today, the Coast Guard director-general, Suresh Mehta, said the new stations would be set up in a phased manner over a ten-year period in several States all along the Coast to increase its general presence and vigil. During its revised perspective plan, it was envisaged to replace the ageing ships and aircraft and acquire additional force levels commensurate with the enhanced role of the Coast Guard, Vice-Admiral Mehta said. The proposed acquisitions include pollution control vessels, advanced offshore patrol vessels and Chetak helicopters, he said, adding that at present it had 53 ships, 24 aircraft and 20 helicopters. Since the inception of the force 26 years ago, it had apprehended 800 foreign fishing vessels and 101 contraband vessels and the value of contraband seized was Rs. 261.75 crores. PTI
