Letters to the Editor
Sir, The VHP leader, Pravin Togadia, is always bent upon adding fuel to fire in communally-sensitive areas. It is unbecoming of him to say that the Telugu Desam Party came to power in Andhra Pradesh with a majority Hindu vote and is now playing vote-bank politics. It is deplorable that he holds the Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu, responsible for his arrest and asks whether he stood for Ram or Babar. Division among voters on communal lines is relatively unknown in the South, especially Andhra Pradesh, and now people like Mr. Togadia are trying to create such divisions. The purpose of his visit, Mr. Togadia explained, was to mobilise Ram sevaks and support for the construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya. His claims are not true. Though the arrest and release of Mr. Togadia were shaky steps to prevent trouble at his public meetings, the High Court has done a balancing act by allowing the VHP meet at Anantapur on an undertaking that it would be solely responsible for any untoward incidents. The administration should take further necessary steps to safeguard peace. B. Sarath Babu, Hyderabad
