The Highways department declared the structure illegal and advised the members of the Kodiakanal unit, who erected the dais, to demolish it. But the supporters protested and had a wordy duel with officials. They told the officials that the structure would be removed after Mr. Karunanidhi left the place. Heavy police personnel, including a striking force, were deployed. The former Minister, I. Periasamy, and other leaders held negotiations with the officials. Mr. Karunanidhi had been camping in Kodaikanal to write a poem, `Thai', on Maxim Gorky's novel.
