Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
Inaugurating a workshop on "Water conservation and sanitation'', organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, AP State branch'', to mark World Water Day celebrations, he departed from the prepared speech to lay stress on saving and judicious use of water. He said: "There is drought for the second consecutive year bringing misery to and affecting the life of people. Agriculture is suffering. Water is not sufficient for drinking. There is less food for people and cattle. People are migrating. The State has to take extra measures to supply water to people''. Mr. Barnala noted that the country recognised millions years back the value of water. That was why rivers were treated as sacred and not polluted. Colonies were established on river banks and near lakes and tanks. The abundance of rain and the course of great rivers determined where our great centres of learning would rise and flourish. While issuing "save water to save life'' slogan, he impressed upon the large number of school students present at the venue, Ravindra Bharati, to pray to god to that we are relieved from drought. "Children should pray as god accepts their prayers''. The Governor released a booklet on conservation of water. Surjit Kaur Barnala, wife of the Governor, unveiled a poster on "save water for future,'' which was the theme of the workshop. He expressed happiness that hundreds of children from different schools in the city had in the morning participated in a rally for creating awareness about water. The Governor flagged off the rally at the Raj Bhavan.
