CSP will be given more powers: Kharge

By Our Staff Correspondent

UDUPI MARCH 22. The Home Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, said here today that the Government would give more powers to the Coastal Security Police (CSP).

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the District Police Office and inaugurating the new police staff quarters.

Mr. Kharge said that he had asked the Director General and Inspector General of Police, T.G. Madiyal, to submit a report on strengthening the CSP immediately. The State had a 300-km-long coastline and the CSP had an important role in preventing illegal activities.

Stating that the Government was giving priority to modernising the police force, the minister said modern equipment had been installed in all police stations in the last three years. Jeeps were provided to all police stations in the State. Nearly 10,000 police constables had been recruited in a transparent manner. The discretionary marks for recruitment of sub-inspectors had been reduced from 100 to seven, to stop favouritism.

As many as 6,400 houses were built by the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation (KSPHC) after the Congress Government came to power, Mr. Kharge said. This was more than what was constructed in the last 17 years. Presently, the Government had built houses for 48 per cent of the police personnel. The State Government had allotted Rs. 180 crore in the Budget for the construction of 5,000 houses. The minister said the group insurance cover for policemen had been increased from Rs. one lakh to Rs. three lakh. Though there were deficiencies in the Police Department, the Government was doing its best to set them right. He said the Government would provide a job for any deserving member of the family of the police constable, Satish, who died while on duty at Padubidri. His family would also receive his salary as pension, Mr. Kharge said. R. Srikumar, Chairman, KSPHC, welcomed the gathering. Amrit Paul, Superintendent of Police, delivered the introductory remarks. U.R. Sabhapathy, MLA, presided over the function. Rupa Diwakar proposed a vote of thanks.

Vasanth V. Salian, district in-charge minister, Mr. Madiyal, Vinaykumar Sorake, MP, Gopal Bhandary and Jayaprakash Hegde, MLAs, Bhujanga Shetty, President of the zilla panchayat,T. Gopalkrishna Shetty, Chairman of UUDA, and D.P. Negi, IGP of Western Range, were among those present.
