Steps on to modernise police force: Rangasamy

Pondicherry March 22 . The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today said steps had been taken to modernise the police force in the Union Territory.

Laying the foundation for a Rs. 35-lakh residential quarters for police personnel in Mahe region, Mr. Rangasamy said constables would be promoted to the rank of head constables soon.

Mr. Rangasamy, who also holds the Home portfolio, was on a one-day visit to the region. The Government was in touch with the Centre to concede the demands of the police personnel. A batch of 162 policemen was recruited on the basis of merit. The head constables were promoted to the next higher rank, said an official release.

Mr. Rangasamy, who also laid the foundation for the Rs. 1-crore flood control infrastructure in Mahe, said his Government had fulfilled all assurances given on the floor of the House during the last budget session and the achievements had been made within a year.

The Government's ambition was to create cent per cent literacy by 2010. The present rate was 82.23 per cent. He said attention was given for development of all four regions of the Union Territory without discrimination.

The Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, the Parliamentary Secretary to Chief Minister, A.V. Sridharan, the PWD chief engineer, P.P. Srinivasan, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Anandh Mohan, and the Regional Administrator of Mahe region, A. Kullan, spoke.

The other projects inaugurated by the Chief Minister included an overhead tank at Palloor.

He also gave away financial assistance to four persons towards for treatment of certain ailments.
