By Our Tamil Nadu Bureau

TUTICORIN MARCH 22. The bishop of Tuticorin, Peter Fernando, has been promoted new archbishop of Madurai, in the place of Marianus Arokiasamy, who has retired.

The decision of the Vatican was formally announced in Madurai today by Rev. Arokiasamy.

Rev. Fernando is the secretary of the Tamil Nadu Bishops Council and formerly Chairman of the Catholic Bishops of India.

The new archbishop will continue to be the apostolic administrator of the Tuticorin diocese until a new bishop is appointed for Tuticorin.

Rev. Fernando, who spoke to the media at Tuticorin this evening, said he would take charge before month-end.

The promotion announcement came on his birthday today. It was a gift from Rome, the Bishop said.

Rev. Fernando (65), who became the bishop of Tuticorin in 2000, said that during the last three years he had created 18 new parishes in the diocese for the spiritual welfare of the people.

He has written a few books including `Theologising in India', `Image of Women' and `Socio-Pastoral Dimension in Priestly Formation'. Rev. Fernando has been nominated as a CCBI delegate for the 48th International Eucharistic Congress to be held in Mexico during October 10-17, 2004.
