Petrol pump robbers arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI MARCH 22. Five persons allegedly involved in a series of petrol pump robberies and auto-lifting cases across the city have been arrested in Mangolpuri by the North-West Delhi police. Three country-made firearms and live cartridges have been recovered from them.

Incidents of robbery at the Drive Well petrol pump in Dilshad Garden on February 5, Budh Singh Gulab Singh petrol pump in Malviya Nagar, Ridge View petrol pump at Shalimar Bagh and cases of vehicle-jacking prompted the North-West Delhi police to form a special team to nab the culprits.

The team, headed by Inspector K.G. Tyagi under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joy Tirkey, zeroed in on one Sanjiv Ganja gang and was tipped off that the gangsters would come to Mangolpuri to commit a robbery at a petrol pump.

Accordingly, teams were formed and positioned near two probable targets. Around 10-30 p.m., the police spotted a Maruti- 800 car with a registration number of a vehicle that was stolen from Geeta Colony. The police intercepted the car and overpowered its occupants. Three country-made weapons were recovered from them.

During interrogation, the accused identified themselves as Sanjiv Ganja, Naushad, Suraj, Sagar, from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh; and Shyam Sunder from Shahdara in North-East Delhi. They allegedly confessed to their involvement in at least 22 cases of petrol pump robberies, robbery of vehicles and burglaries in the past four months.

The car they used to commit the robbery at Drive Well petrol pump had been stolen from Kalkaji in South Delhi. The same car was used in the Malviya Nagar and the Shalimar Bagh robbery cases.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, North-West Delhi, the gang members were so desperate that they committed crime without any particular plan. They robbed at least four Toyota Qualis, Maruti cars and tempos from across the Capital. The criminals used robbed tempos to commit thefts in show-rooms.

Investigations revealed that they committed theft and robbery at Najafgarh, Malviya Nagar and at Bawana market places and fled with goods worth lakhs of rupees.

The gang leader, Sanjiv, disclosed that he chose petrol pumps to commit robbery as they were easy targets. A resident of Ghaziabad, Sanjiv, has been jailed a number times and is involved in 20 cases.

Sanjiv was released about four months ago after which he regrouped his gang. He started committing crime in Delhi and frequented his brother's residence in Shahdara.

His accomplice, Shyam Sunder is a bad character of Shahdara police station and had been externed recently.

It is learnt that with these arrests, the police are expecting to bust an auto-lifting gang soon.
