'India has a role in ensuring global peace'

By Sarabjit Pandher

CHANDIGARH March 23. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, said here today that India has a major role in ensuring global peace. He was reacting to the recent developments at the international level, especially the ongoing U.S.-led attacks on Iraq.

After paying homage to the legendary freedom fighter, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Dr. Kalam told presspersons that science could help build a beautiful and peaceful planet, in which India could play a major role.

Later, interacting with school children at Kapurthala, he reiterated the need for peace. Dr. Kalam emphasised that determination, scientific knowledge and creativity among youth carried the power to make India self-reliant in different fields. ``Nothing is impossible,'' he said citing the example of Bhagat Singh.

He also visited the science city project under construction and he prayed for the prosperity of Indians at the famous Moorish Mosque here today. Prominent Muslims joined him in his afternoon prayers. He also presided over the convocation of the Punjab Technical University (PTU).

He visited Kharaudi village in Hoshiarpur district, where Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) had contributed to the development of the village.
