Additional allocation of foodgrains for some drought-hit States was also approved by the Task Force on Drought, which met here today, presided over by the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani. The Agriculture Minister, Ajit Singh, said Rajasthan would get Rs. 682.35 crores from the NCCF while Tamil Nadu would receive Rs. 258.44 crores. Andhra Pradesh would get Rs. 224.43 crores and Gujarat Rs. 150.29 crores. While Madhya Pradesh would receive Rs. 75.99 crores, Chhattisgarh would get Rs. 61.89 crores, Karnataka Rs. 61.63 crores, Orissa Rs. 61.58 crores, Maharashtra Rs. 46.50 crores and Himachal Pradesh Rs. 25.67 crores. Mr. Singh said assistance from the NCCF could be utilised till the end of June and the balances available with the States under the Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) would be adjusted against today's allocation under the NCCF. Out of the Rs. 1648.77 crores sanctioned, Rs. 503.13 crores would be spent on cattle care, Rs. 402.61 crores on employment generation, Rs. 349.35 crores on drinking water supply and Rs. 393.68 crores on other drought-relief works. An additional allocation of 11.60 lakh tonnes of foodgrains has been made for the four States for taking up drought relief works during the next three months. Andhra Pradesh would get an additional 6.85 lakh tonnes, Madhya Pradesh 1.33 lakh tonnes, Karnataka 1.25 lakh tonnes and Chhattisgarh 2.07 lakh tonnes. Additional allocations were based on the reports of the Central teams and utilisation of foodgrains in the four States. Today's Central relief came a day after the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, met the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, and urged him to give the State 20 lakh tonnes of rice. The State had so far received only about 5 lakh tonnes. According to his assessment, the next three months would be severe with demands for drinking water, fodder and employment generation schemes going up considerably. The Centre has faced criticism from several States for lack of sufficient assistance and additional foodgrains to tide over the drought situation.
