By Shujaat Bukhari

SOPORE MARCH 23. The former chief commander of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Abdul Majid Dar, was shot dead here today by unidentified gunmen in broad daylight. In the shoot-out his mother and sister were injured.

According to eyewitnesses, four gun-wielding youths appeared in Noorbagh locality in a car at around 12.15 p.m. and barged into the house of Fayaz Ahmed Dar, brother of Majid Dar. They inquired about Fayaz first and insisted on going inside, but his mother, Shah Begum, and sister, Maimoona, resisted. The two gunmen opened fire on them and forced their way into the room where Majid Dar was reportedly making a telephone call. They pumped bullets into him and fled. He was rushed to the local hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. His mother and sister who sustained serious injuries were also admitted to the hospital here and later shifted to Srinagar.

Senior police and civil officers from the district visited the place and the police registered a case. "We do not have any clue as yet'' a senior police officer said.
