Jammu & Kashmir
By Our Staff Reporter
The first meeting, which went on for two days in the Civil Secretariat here, was held on March 5 and 6. Official sources said that a criterion for the future release of prisoners was agreed on the first day of the meeting. On the second day a list of about 90 cases were studied and it was decided to revoke the detention orders of 17 prisoners. A good number of those released belonged to the Chief Minister's district Anantnag. The JSC submitted the list to the Chief Minister, who holds the Home portfolio, and he in turn ordered their release some days later. Most of the cases relate to those who are facing mild militancy-related charges and the list also includes 27 political prisoners. The vice-president of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, has said: " The process of release of innocents will continue in the times to come and this will certainly bring down the alienation of the youth of the State paving the way for bringing early peace in the State."
