Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
Padmavatamma from Uravakonda in Anantapur district was removed from the premises by the security staff as she protested at not being allowed to see Mr. Goud. She then squatted in front of the main gate until women constables arrived and shifted her to the Saifabad Police Station. Padmavatamma claimed that she had deposited a whopping Rs. 26 lakhs collected from small savers with Asra India at Uravakonda. However, the proprietor, Syed Sardar, turned out to be a `fly-by-night' operator. All the branches of Asra India in Rayalaseema districts were closed a year ago. She approached the local Congress MLA, Y. Sivarama Reddy, and the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who she said, had promised to raise the issue in the Assembly on Saturday. However, this did not happen both on Saturday and Monday since the Congress was bogged down in a confrontation with the Government over payment of ex gratia to families of farmers who committed suicide. Nevertheless, the CLP leader guided the woman to the Home Minister when she met him in the Assembly lobbies. As she pressed for an appointment with Mr. Goud in his chambers, the security staff overreacted and drove her out ignoring her protest.
