CBI recovers antique paintings

NEW DELHI MARCH 24. Antique paintings by eminent artists, worth over a crore of rupees, have been recovered in a raid conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in association with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) at the offices and godown of a firm dealing with sale and purchase of antiquities.

According to a CBI spokesperson, the raid was conducted at the Sundar Nagar office of the firm and its warehouse in Defence Colony here. At least nine registered paintings of Raja Ravi Varma have been recovered. Another painting depicting a nude is by P. Gerhardt.Investigations revealed that the firm had sold 73 precious paintings by way of auctions at Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore. However, the firm did not have the requisite licence from the ASI under Section 5 of the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.

A case has been registered by the CBI. No arrests have been made so far.
