It gave birth to a male calf early on Sunday. The zoo authorities said the mother and the calf were in good health. Rani is 15-year old and was brought to the zoo in 1992 from the Bannerghatta National Park in Bangalore. It delivered a calf for the first time in January 1993 and since then, the animal had conceived and delivered 10 calves. Gaurs have a lifespan of 18 to 20 years. Kumar Pushkar, Executive Director of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, said this was a record as far as breeding in captivity was considered. Rani had delivered three male and seven female calves. There was also a case of premature stillbirth. The zoo authorities attribute the high rate of successful captive breeding to factors such as good food and nutrition and veterinary care.
