Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
Those calling the Library got a recorded message which said `we apologise to our members that in view of the current security situation, the library will remain closed today'. According to the librarian, Subramoni, the decision not to open the library was taken by the British Council authorities in New Delhi. The situation is being monitored on a daily basis by the authorities from Delhi and the decision whether to open the library on a particular day will be taken that day morning. As of today, no decision had been taken to close down the library for any period of time, Mr. Subramoni elaborated. During the Gulf War of 1991, the British Library had operated under the protection of armed policemen. Subsequently, security measures were strengthened with the introduction of a walk-through metal detector at the entrance to the library. The bag counter was shifted from the main hall to the portico and the charge of security was given to a private security agency.
