He pointed out that the electricity authority had billed Rs.54 lakhs as dues from Mr. Sanjay Khan. Subsequently, the appellate authority had reduced the amount to Rs.9 lakhs. But the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) had not objected to the reduced amount. Mr. Nanaiah said that the Government, by withdrawing the case, had made a mockery of the amendment to the Electricity Act under which stringent action was supposed to be taken against those drawing power illegally. Taking exception to the Government giving concession to one person, Mr. Nanaiah said this should be extended to all against whom such cases had been filed. The Minister for Energy, Basavaraj Patil, said the Government had taken a decision to compound the penalty and had withdrawn about 2,000 such cases.
