The Fredom of Religious Conversion Bill 2003, tabled in the Gujarat Assembly recently, infringes on the guarantees enshrined in the Constitution and the freedom of religious practices of the Christian community, according to the Global Council of Indian Christians. Its national convener, Sajan K. George, has urged the Narendra Modi Government to withdraw the bill to instil confidence and provide a level playing field for Christians in Gujarat. He said the Christian population in Gujarat has not grown as alleged in some quarters. Christians formed 0.48 per cent of the population in 1951, 0.44 in 1961, 0.41in 1971 and 0.37 in 1981. The figure stood at 0.44 as per the 1991 census. The Council fears that the bill, which has the "potential for chaos", may be used to oppress Christian missionaries who had worked for the uplift of the poor. It feels that members of the minority communities, especially the Christians, are facing increasing oppression, blackmail and intimidation. The Council urged the Gujarat Government to withdraw the bill to uphold freedom of religion for all sections of the society.
