Nadimarg massacre

Sir, — The People's Union for Democratic Rights condemns the killing of 24 members of Kashmiri Pandit families by militants in Nadimarg, Jammu and Kashmir. The fact that the militants chose innocent civilians, including women and children, is reprehensible. While the strike is seen as a possible revenge for the killing of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander, Abdul Majid Dar, survivors have complained that they had apprehensions of a possible attack and had appealed to the Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, for protection but to no avail. The massacre is a reminder to the State Government that the situation of the 9,000 odd Kashmiri Pandit families, who did not migrate in 1990, is both vulnerable and precarious. That they have chosen to live in spite of opposition from the militants is commendable and their well-being should be the Government's priority.

The fact that the Muslim families immediately came to console and help the Hindu victims shows that the lives of ordinary people are not always built on suspicion and mistrust.

Ujjwal Kumar Singh,
New Delhi
