Letters to the Editor
Sir, Apropos Editorial "U.N. Council must act" March 22 The U.S. has acted like a terrorist state. And what happened to the League of Nations is happening to the U.N. The U.S. may consider itself the backbone of the U.N., peace and the ultimate arbiter of change, but history is apt to judge them differently. The U.S. Government is waging the aggression in its own interest. It is a way of disposing the surpluses of the immense industrial productive power of the war-based American economy.
A. Subbian,
Sir, The Defence Minister, George Fernandes' announcement that India would not allow refuelling facilities to the U.S. Air Force in case of an Iraq war, was not only unauthorised but also premature. The Americans had not asked for any such facility from India and if at all any such decision had been made, it is for the Prime Minister to make the announcement. Also, American warplanes would not take such a long detour for refuelling. They would rather refuel at the Pakistani air bases nearby. Mr. Bush has not relaxed sanctions against Pakistan as a charity measure. Mr. Fernandes' announcement is also against Indian interests as Mr. Hussein is no friend of India. His recent declaration of fighting the war in any corner of the world is an indication of his terrorist connections the world over.
K.C. Sagar,
