Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Value Added Tax scheme should be implemented immediately. There is immense pressure from the trade lobby for postponement of its implementation, which was evident from the bandh observed on March 25. VAT is a major shift from our traditional tax collection system, which is difficult to administer and has loopholes for tax evasion and corruption. It is simple in structure and reduces tax evasion. To meet the challenges of liberalisation and enable domestic industry to have a healthy competition, it is imperative that VAT be introduced with effect from April 1.
