Death of `RK' major blow to PW

By Ravi Reddy

NIZAMABAD MARCH 26. In a career spanning 13 years, the North Telangana Special Zone Committee member and Nizamabad division committee Secretary, Polam Sudarshan Reddy alias Ramakrishna alias RK, (35), who was killed in an encounter with the police in the Laxmipur forest area of Adilabad district kept on tenterhooks the police in Warangal district and was involved in no fewer than 1,042 criminal cases.

The death of RK is considered to be a major blow to the party, particularly in Nizamabad division, which is facing its worst crisis. The PW, which had immense faith in RK, elevated him as NTSZC member and directed him to take charge of the Nizamabad division committee secretary with a single point agenda to revive the movement in the division.

For a person who is said to have participated in 125 exchanges of fire, the Laxmipur encounter turned out to be his nemesis. He had providential escape from major encounters in Medikonda (1991), Gorikothapalli and Kaukonda in 2000 but fell to a hail of bullets in the Laxmipur encounter. He was an accused in 114 murder cases.

Hailing from Mogilicherla village of Geesukonda mandal, Ramakrishna was attracted to the underground movement as a student of the Lal Bahadur College in Warangal town and joined the Radical Students Union (RSU). For a brief period, he was a worker in the Telugu Desam Party in his native mandal. But he joined the Parkal dalam as a member in 1989 and went on to head it. Between 1991 and 1993, the Parkal dalam was in the news for sensational incidents.

Impressed by his performance, he was elevated as District Committee member and made incharge of Station Ghanpur and Jangaon area committee. Later, he was moved to Warangal as the member of the City committee. He was said to be a pioneer in urban guerrilla warfare and single-handedly built the movement in Warangal city. Being a mastermind in the military strategy, he was subsequently elevated as the District Committee Secretary.

He believed in operating on different fronts and created several cover organisations among youth, farmers, students and women. At the same time, his covert operations in political circles left political leaders shocked. He used to cleverly manage his agents in the political parties and got crucial information about their movements.

Ramakrishna kept the Warangal police on tenterhooks for a long time. He particularly targeted the police with precision and the results were devastating. During the 1994 Assembly polls, he was responsible for the blasting of a police vehicle near Orugonda killing 14 policemen. In 1996, he blasted a police vehicle near Jakaram killing seven policemen. The Wardhannapet SI, Raghu, also fell victim to RK's violence. He participated in the attack on the Tirumalagiri police station in Nalgonda in 2000, Kothaguda PS on two occasions in 2001 and made a bid on the life of a CI in Hanmakonda town in 2001 by trying to blast the police station itself.

Politicians also became victims of his violence. Notable among them was the killing of the Hasanparthy MPP and Congress general secretary, Tokula Devender Reddy, in 1999, Chityal MPP, Surender Reddy along with another person, Anumula Venkat Reddy, Parkal BJP leader Soundaraiah and Khanapur MPP Modi Ramulu in 2001.

Ramakrishna's end came even before he could settle down as the Nizamabad division committee secretary. After the death of previous DCS, Padmakka, in an encounter in Nerel in Karimnagar district, the PW desperately tried to revive the movement and found Ramakrishna an able leader. The movement is expected to take a backseat in Nizamabad division till the PW finds a suitable alternative to RK.
