Nagaraj, Superintendent of Police, Lokayukta, Chitradurga, who led the raid, told presspersons that the tax collection of Rs.6 lakh had not been deposited in the bank. He had asked the Municipal Commissioner, K.M. Dharmappa, to initiate action against the clerks responsible for it. He had received complaints that some clerks were demanding bribes ranging from Rs.25 to Rs.50 for issuing birth and death certificates. When he visited the section concerned, one of the clerks admitted to having taken bribe. He had received similar complaints in the issuance of khata certificates also. Over 100 applications for khata extracts had been pending since January. He had asked Mr. Dharmappa to take suitable action against the officials who had committed irregularities. Asked what were the responsibilities of the Municipal Commissioner, Mr. Nagaraj said he would have to own responsibility for the administrative lapses of his staff. He went through the files and other material stored in the personal cupboards of Mr. Dharmappa. Another cupboard was yet to be checked. Mr. Nagaraj said he would send a detailed report on the findings of the raids to the Inspector- General of Police (Lokayukta) for follow-up action. No documents had been seized in the raid. Similar raids would be conducted on government offices if complaints were received against them.
