Cheques issued to Mumbai blast victims bounce

MUMBAI MARCH 26. The cheques issued by the state Government to the families of three persons who died in the Mulund bomb blast as immediate compensation have bounced, the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, Nitin Gadkari, said today.

Mr. Gadkari drew the attention of the Chair by saying that the Rs 50,000 cheques issued by the State Government to the three deceased from Badlapur -- Jagdish Bhatia, Shirish Agashe and Reena Patnaik -- had bounced.

``It is shameful that the State Government did not have Rs 50,000 in its treasury,'' the opposition members charged and added that the Ulhasnagar-based Canara Bank, where the three were asked to open accounts for cheque deposition had slapped them with a fine of Rs 12 since the transaction was not honoured.

The opposition members also demanded action under Negotiable Instruments Act.

The deputy chairman, Vasant Davkhare, who was in the chair, condemned the government and directed it to clear the cheques by tomorrow.

Later, the Excise Minister, Anil Deshmukh, informed the House that the cheques of two persons had been cleared by 5.30 p.m. --PTI
