Govt. may defer VAT

By Our Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN MARCH 26. The much talked about Value Added Tax (VAT) regime may not begin in Uttaranchal Pradesh on April 1 as the State Government plans to first study its intricacies when implemented in other States.

The Government has decided to form a Group of Ministers to ensure that the views of the business community and the consumers are taken into consideration while keeping the revenue interests of the State in mind, highly-placed sources said here today.

Various business associations in the State have opposed introduction of VAT and described it as a draconian law aimed at "fleecing'' the traders. After a successful State-wide bandh against VAT, the top business associations leaders held several parleys with Ministers and senior bureaucrats in a bid to check any moves to introduce it.

Although the VAT regime cannot be deferred indefinitely, attempts would be made to make it friendly to all so that both traders and consumers feel comfortable, the sources said.

According to a local industrialist, Anil Khurana, the Government should give maximum reliefs for production and sale of goods in the cash-strapped State where the levels of production and consumption are low due to various reasons. "The Centre should be asked to give out liberal grants to the State so that it does not depend on locally generated revenue at the cost of enterprise and the consumer,'' he said.
