Govt. allays fears on water supply

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore March 26. The Karnataka Government reiterated in the Legislative Assembly today that there was no dearth of funds for provision of drinking water and a standing order was in force which enabled authorities to drill borewells in any area if the per capita availability of water dipped below 20 litres a day.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Rural Water Supply, K.B. Koliwad, during question hour. B.N. Bachche Gowda (JD-U) and others were informed that any complaint of non- availability of water would be attended to within 24 hours.

Mr. Koliwad said the Government had released Rs. 44.54 crores to the districts from the Calamity Relief Fund and Rs. 14 crore from the Rs.189. 18 crores sanctioned by the Centre under the National Calamity Contingency Fund to meet the drinking water shortage caused by drought.

Asking members not to generalise complaints on scarcity of water, Mr. Koliwad said the Government had kept a reserve fund of Rs. 50 lakhs in each district. Action was being taken to hydro-fracture defunct borewells to get water.

Housing

The Minister for Housing, C.R. Sageer Ahmed, informed J.T. Patil (Cong.) that the Karnataka Housing Board had taken up work in 53 places under the "100 Housing Projects" scheme.

A total of 100 places would be covered at a cost of Rs. 800 crores.

The scheme was demand-based one and the cost differed from place to place.

The Minister for Higher Education, G. Parameshwar, informed K. Prabhakar Bangera (BJP) that there was no uniformity in the syllabus for the MCA course in the different universities in the State.

The question of having a uniform syllabus would be examined by the Government.
