Three wagons of the goods train that derailed seen telescoped into each other and lying across the track near Katpadi on Wednesday. A part of the track that got uprooted is seen protruding at the right. Photo: A. Muralitharan
The accident occurred when the 40-wagon train carrying cement loads crossed the Katpadi station. The driver reportedly felt a sudden drop in the vacuum as the 10 wagons derailed at a spot about 300 metres away from the station between Katpadi and Latteri at 6.53 a.m. While the last two wagons derailed slightly, the other eight wagons had telescoped into each other. Some of them had fell across the track of both the up and down lines. The impact of the derailment was so heavy that the wheels and axle of one of the wagons got detached and were lying on the side. A part of the track got uprooted and was seen protruding upwards from the detached wheel. One of the wagons was seen lying on its side across three tracks. Work was on to restore traffic, at least on one single track towards Chennai. The Southern Railway announced the cancellation and rescheduling of several trains today.
