Will Rangasamy Govt. quit on VAT issue, asks Janakiraman

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry March 26. The DMK convener and Opposition leader in the Assembly, R.V. Janakiraman, has challenged the Rangasamy-led Ministry whether it would quit the office if necessity arose for it to implement the Value-Added Tax in the Union Territory.

In a communication here today, Mr. Janakiraman, recalled how his government in 1999 made it clear that if any need arose for adoption of the uniform floor rate of tax, the ministry would step down. A similar announcement should come from the present administration.

The PCC leader, V. Narayanasamy, demanded postponement of implementation of the VAT beyond April 1. If the Government did not concede his plea would he quit the post, asked Janakiraman.

The budgets presented by Congress governments here had cast heavy burden on people. A number of industries had been closed over last three years. Thousands of workers had been thrown out of jobs. An irreparable situation had been caused in the economic front because of uniform rate of sales tax. No section of people had been benefited by any of the scheme. Government staff, AFT mills workers had been ignored, he alleged.

Mr. Janakiraman wanted to know if the Congress government would resign owning its incapability and failure to settle grievances of almost all sections of people.

DMK to observe fast

A fast would be observed by volunteers and representatives of the DMK and like minded parties on March 29 to condemn `the misuse of POTA' by the Tamil Nadu Government.

Mr. Janakiraman said a joint meeting of parties, held at the party office today, adopted a resolution to observe a ten-hour fast from 8 a.m. at Ellapillaichavady junction near the Indira Gandhi statue.

The meeting urged immediate release of the MDMK leader, Vaiko, the Tamizh Desia Iyakkam leader, P. Nedumaran, and others held under the POTA.
