Traffic police warn govt. agencies against negligence

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENnAI MARCH 26 . Following the Tuesday's road accident on Cathedral Garden Road in which a woman two-wheeler rider was killed, the city traffic police said they would take serious note of negligence on the part of service agencies or commercial houses.Stating that Metrowater and the Corporation had been constantly flouting safety norms, the Joint Commissioner, G.U.G. Sastry, said it was high time the agencies showed more accountability. In this case, Metrowater or the Corporation could have followed up on road cut restoration works. The Traffic department would write to the civic agencies to conduct investigation into the accident and take departmental action, he told The Hindu. While in this particular case, the police could not fix criminal responsibility on the engineering staff due to a combination of factors, the department would not hesitate to take action if such incidents recurred.

"If they do not rectify the defects on the roads, we will stop giving permission for road cuts. If they still flout the norms, we will take criminal action against the erring agency. This holds good for even the contractors and commercial houses involved in road cuts," Mr. Sastry said.
