Letters to the Editor
Sir, As observed by C. Raja Mohan ( March 27 ), India has not virtually gained anything by adopting a "cautious middle path". Unlike last time, when it stood by the losing side, this time the story is different. Countries like India could not support the plans of colonial forces and hence, should have adopted a pro-Iraq attitude, which could attract a few other discounts. Now it is too late and the only option left is to strive to minimise the casualties on account of the attack on Baghdad and eventual change of power. India can play a vital role in post war arrangements, with a view to maintaining the territorial integrity of Iraq and safeguarding the interests of Iraqis in their fight against poverty and diseases. It can offer large-scale food items and medicines to the suffering Iraqis. This will be the way to correct the error of adopting a `middle-path'.
C.P. Velayudhan Nair,
Sir In what way supporting the U.S. going to help Indian interest? When the Indian Parliament was attacked, the U.S. pressured us not to go to war. Now both Mr. Bush and the U.N. inspectors have failed to prove that Saddam is a threat either to the U.S. or to world peace. The war has violated all canons of international law. It is not about liberating the Iraqi people but is a manifestation of U.S. frustration with its own failure to bring Osama-bin Laden to book.
S. Kasimayan,
