Sir, The article "Can VAT deliver proclaimed benefit?" (March 24) says that the consumer prices would go up when VAT is implemented. I wonder whether any MRP (maximum retail price) can be printed on consumer goods, medicines, etc., after implementation of VAT. Since goods change hands through several sales outlets a uniform MRP cannot be maintained throughout the country. VAT need not be implemented in a hurried manner because ultimately it is the consumer who is heavily affected.
S. Sundararaman,
Sir, From time immemorial handloom weaving has played a prominent role in village economy and saved many destitute men and women from poverty. Ever since Independence, the small-scale industry has been recognised as a key factor for economic development. The Mahatma adopted Khadi as a medium to create better life to the craft-based society. If the Government wants a prosperous rural India it should exempt Khadi and village industry from the impending VAT and other State taxes.
N. Srinivasan,
