6.6 lakh students take SSLC exams

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI March 27. A total of 6,66,315 students, including 3,31,406 girls, began writing the SSLC examinations in 2,032 centres across the State today. For the matriculation examinations, 859 students are appearing, and for the Anglo-Indian School Leaving Examination, 4,854.

The Education Minister, S. Semmalai, who visited a school at Santhome in south Chennai, to oversee arrangements, told newspersons that the number of regular candidates for the SSLC examination had increased by over 42,000.

But the number of private candidates (83,884) had come down by more than one-third this year, thanks to the `instant' re-examination scheme launched last year.

Students who failed in one or two subjects were allowed to sit for the ``special supplementary examination'' held in June. The results were released within a fortnight and the candidates were able to join the higher class the same academic year.

Similarly in the matriculation stream, the number of regular examinees had gone up by 3,473, while that of private candidates number had come down by 986, for the same reason.

The SSLC examination would go on till April 8 and the two other streams till April 10. As was done for the Plus-Two examinations, students from more than one school were being mixed and seated in the same hall in some of the institutions, to prevent malpractices, Mr. Semmalai said.

Secret coding on marksheets

From this year, SSLC and matriculation mark certificates would have more ``secret coding'' features to eliminate bogus documents.

The head of the institution would affix a seal saying, ``This mark certificate is distributed to ... .school'' and sign personally on each certificate. The hologram would be replaced with four new security markings, said the Director of Examinations, C. Palanivelu.

Mr. Semmalai said the Directorate of Government Examinations had in the past been providing photocopies of answer-sheets in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, to applicants. From this year, copies of Botany and Zoology papers would also be provided.

HSC results by May 17

Valuation of the higher secondary answer papers would be completed by more than 40,000 examiners by April 15 and the results released around May 17. The department hoped to release the results of the SSLC/Matriculation/Anglo-Indian School examinations by May 31.

Answering a question, Mr. Semmalai said the Directorate would try to publish all results on its own web site, instead of hosting them on other private portals.
