`Register cases against police for militants' death'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI MARCH 27. The People's Union for Civil Liberties (Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry) has demanded that the Tamil Nadu Government register cases against the police personnel responsible for the death of Saravanan and Rajaram, militants, who were killed at Kottupuram here on Tuesday.

In a statement here, the general secretary, V.Suresh, said the incident was only one among "a spate of encounter deaths all over the city in recent months". A case of culpable homicide should be registered against the police officials concerned. If indeed the officers opened fire in self-defence, they were free to argue their case during trial. The CBI should investigate the case.

Meanwhile, following a petition filed in connection with the incident, the Member of the State Human Rights Commission, S.Sambandham, has ordered notice to the City Police Commissioner, returnable by April 17.
