Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
In a statement here, the general secretary, V.Suresh, said the incident was only one among "a spate of encounter deaths all over the city in recent months". A case of culpable homicide should be registered against the police officials concerned. If indeed the officers opened fire in self-defence, they were free to argue their case during trial. The CBI should investigate the case. Meanwhile, following a petition filed in connection with the incident, the Member of the State Human Rights Commission, S.Sambandham, has ordered notice to the City Police Commissioner, returnable by April 17.
