The report of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the House adopted here today fixed two hours for the discussion on the ``resolution'' on April one. Punjab had failed to complete the SYL Canal by January 15 as per directions of the Supreme Court on the plea that it does not have spare water. The matter is presently before the Apex Court. The BAC also fixed a 90-minute discussion on a motion under Rule 77 regarding ``thrashing of and causing injuries to the Akali-BJP councillors during the recent elections to the nagar panchayats, municipal councils, parishads in the State''. The budget session, which commenced on March 14, would end on April 2, when the House would adjourn sine die, the BAC decided. There would be no sittings of the House on March 30 and March 31. Deputy Speaker of Punjab Assembly The Punjab Congress legislator, Bir Devinder Singh, was today unanimously elected Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly. His name was proposed by the Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, and seconded by the Local Bodies Minister, Jagjit Singh, while Manpreet Singh Badal from the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) urged the Speaker, Kewal Krishan, that the opposition wanted Bir Devinder to be unanimously elected for the position. Congratulating the newly elected Deputy Speaker, the Chief Minister praised Bir Devinder Singh as a dedicated legislator who could maintain the dignity of the House. -- PTI &UNI
