Judicial remand for Dawood's brother

MUMBAI MARCH 27. Younger brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Iqbal Hassan Ibrahim Shaikh, and two others were today remanded to judicial custody till April 10 by a special court in a case of alleged extortion and land grabbing under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) even as the police accused the three of tampering with evidence.

Earlier, the accused had been in police custody and for the first time they were placed in judicial custody today.

On a plea of defence lawyer Shyam Keswani, the designated judge, A P Bhangale, directed the Superintendent of central prison to segregate Iqbal from other prisoners as he feared threat to his life from rival gangsters. Hearing lawyer Waris Pathan, the judge directed the jailor to allow co-accused medicines prescribed by doctors.

Others arrested with Iqbal are Abdul Rehman Abdul Gafoor Shaikh and Abdul Sattar Haji Hiva Radhanpur. The trio is facing the charge of forcibly evicting a woman from her hut which obstructed the entrance of a shopping centre, allegedly owned by Dawood Ibrahim and his associate Chhota Shakeel, in south Mumbai. — PTI
