'Excavation cannot resolve issue'

LUCKNOW MARCH 29. Social activist Medha Patkar today said the ongoing excavation in Ayodhya would not help resolve the vexed issue nor could the recovery of some artefacts prove that a temple pre-existed the Babri Masjid.

The excavation at the acquired site in Ayodhya could open a "pandora's box" as similar demands could come from other parts of the country as well, she told reporters here and claiming that already there were demands for excavation of some `dargahs' (tombs of Muslim sufi saints) in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh.

The only way of resolving the issue was to leave it to the people of Ayodhya, she said adding that "the public was the fifth pillar of a state and it should have the right to criticise court orders".
