As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, half of the 18-member Standing Committee retires every year. Though the tenure of each member is two years, names of nine members to retire from the Standing Committee during the first year of present MCD House was taken through draw of lots last week but was sealed and opened today. The vacancy thus created would be filled up through a fresh election in the MCD House and the Zonal Committees. Among the other Councillors who today retired from Standing Committee were Raj Karan Khatri from Narela Zone, Pratap Narain from Sadar Paharganj, Bhagbir from Central Zone, Ramesh Pandit from Shahdara (South), Manjit Singh Khanna from Karol Bagh and Jagdish Pradhan from Shahdara (North). The Congress Councillor from Jafrabad, Razia Sultana, was elected from House quota too retired from the Standing Committee. The Councillors who had luck in their favour were Mukesh Goel, Surinder Pal Singh and Vijender Kumar, from the MCD House quota, Satpal Sethi from West Zone, Salu Malik from Civil Lines, Kunwar Sen from South, Braj Mohan Sharma from City Zone, Bijender Singh from Najafgarh and Roshan Lal Ahuja from Rohini Zone. While the election for the Standing Committee from MCD House is slated for April 7, last date of filing nomination is April 2, election for those from the Ward Committee members has been fixed for April 9, the last date for filing of nomination is April 4.
