Nose rubbing is out

MASTERTON: Health authorities on Wednesday urged an international gathering here to skip a key part of any formal welcome in New Zealand — the `hongi' or nose rubbing. A Sister Cities Convention here was expected to attract 80 Chinese delegates, but 32 have cancelled. The `hongi' ceremony of pressing noses sees the type of close physical contact the Health Ministry says is responsible for transmitting the virus. The Director of Public Health, Colin Tukuitonga, said performing `hongi' would not be wise because delegates could come from affected areas. — AFP
