Vizag Port tops for the third time

VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 2. The Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has retained its top position among the major ports in the country for the third time in succession during the fiscal ended on Monday, with a cargo thorughput of 46 million tonnes. The Kandla Port Trust comes next, having handled 40.50 million tonnes.

Announcing this "hat-trick'' at a media conference on Tuesday, the VPT Deputy Chairman, P. Tamilvanan, said though there was some shortfall in respect of conventional cargoes, "we added 15 new cargoes to our profile during 2002-03 and they included foodgrains, quartizite, methanol and sulphuric acid.'' The port also handled a container cargo of 21,000 TEUs (20 feet equivalent units).

He envisaged a cargo handling of 60 million tonnes by VPT at the end of the ongoing Tenth Plan (March 2007).

The port's revenue during 2002-03 stood at Rs. 415 crores against Rs. 398.94 crores in the previous fiscal. The operating expenditure was Rs. 225 crores (Rs. 223.64 crores previously), leaving a surplus of Rs.190 crores (Rs.171.24 crores). "The figures for 2002-03 are provisional,'' he said.

Paradip Port's record

<167,3.5p>BHUBANESWAR, APRIL 2. The Paradip Port Trust (PPT) handled an all time record traffic of 23.82 million tonnes during 2002-03 surpassing the record of 21.13 million tonnes handled during 2001-02 thereby recording a growth of 12.73 per cent.

Giving details about the port's performance highlights during 2002-03 at a press conference here on Monday, the outgoing Chairman of PPT, Santosh Kumar Mohapatra, said 2002-03 was a year of growth and quality. The port achieved as many as 39 operational records during the year.

The port earned a total operating revenue of Rs. 375 crores against Rs. 297.21 crores in the previous year.
