Sensex extends gains

MUMBAI APRIL 2. Stocks made a further headway and helped the Sensex extend its winning streak to another day on the Bombay Stock Exchange today on fresh purchases by domestic and foreign funds prompted largely by a rally in global markets.

Foreign funds were believed to have made purchases in select heavyweighted old economy counters while local funds led by Life Insurance Corporation continued to provide follow-up support at a time when retailers took a cautious stance in view of the Gulf crisis.

The BSE benchmark 30-share index opened on a promising note at 3080.94 and gradually moved upwards to the intra-day high at 3120.31 and later ended at 3116.94 against 3080.95, netting a rise of 36.04 points or 1.17 per cent. The broad-based BSE-100 index improved by 22.76 points to 1539.80.

In the specified group, 155 including 21 index-based counters registered sharp to moderate gains while 36 others closed with losses. The BSE-200 and the Dollex-200 were quoted higher at 367.48 and 128.80 against 362.68 and 127.12 respectively. The BSE-500 improved by 15.15 points to 1097.05 from 1081.90 and the Dollex-30 to 538.75 from 532.52.

The volume of business was relatively up at Rs. 1,056.97 crores against Rs. 1,013.94 crores. Digital Global were the most active scrip with the highest turnover of Rs. 194.18 crores followed by Mastek (Rs. 169.64 crores), Satyam (Rs. 147.38 crores) and Infosys (Rs. 102.46 crores). — PTI
