Elite-A extends its dominance

By Our Sports Reporter

Elite-B's Amit Pagnis departs after being caught and bowled by Elite-A's Sarandeep Singh (second from right) while wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta and non-striker Vinayak Mane watch on in the Duleep Trophy match in Bangalore on Saturday.

BANGALORE April 5. Rains played spoilsport while Elite-A extended its dominance over Elite-B in the Duleep Trophy match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Saturday. At the rain-induced close of play on the third day, Elite-B struggled with a second innings score of 64 for four after Elite-A declared at the overnight 362 for eight.

On a day when just 33 overs were bowled, the BCCI's policy on leaving pitches uncovered for domestic matches led to a delayed start as overnight rains left damp spots on the pitch. The day's proceedings commenced after lunch and with time running out, Elite-A declared at its overnight score after securing a 143-run first innings lead.

Elite-B suffered early blows as Wasim Jaffer patted left-arm seamer Irfan Pathan (Jr) straight to Venugopal Rao at short-leg while Amit Pagnis succumbed to Sarandeep Singh. And as the skies darkened, A.T. Rayudu snicked a Sarandeep delivery that spun and kicked, leaving Elite-B in a shambles. The tale of misery continued as Vinayak Mane chopped Sodhi onto his stumps and it was left to Arjun Yadav and captain M.S.K. Prasad to prevent further alarms.

Arjun Yadav looked steady and savoured his pulls of Sarandeep and S. Sriram while M.S.K. Prasad barely survived Irfan Pathan's spell from the pavilion end. Prasad's snicks bisected the slip cordon until bad light intervened.

The game resumed after 16 minutes but the rains returned and play was called off with Elite-B still needing 80 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

The scores:
