Musharraf, Jamali review international situation

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD APRIL 6. The Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, and the Prime Minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, reviewed here on Saturday the regional and international situation in the wake of the events in West Asia and recent `bellicose' statements of certain Indian leaders.

The reference is clearly to the series of interviews by the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, asserting that India has a much better case against Pakistan than the United States on Iraq.

The inference of Mr. Singh on the right of New Delhi to invoke the `doctrine of pre-emptive strikes' has drawn sharp reaction from the Pakistan Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri and statements by Gen. Musharraf and Mr. Jamali that the defence of Pakistan is `impregnable'.

However the political and military establishment is keeping a close watch on the words and actions of various functionaries in the Vajpayee Government. While the statement by the U.S. State Department that there could be no comparison between Iraq and Pakistan has been noted here, the Government is wary of the Indian thinking.

At their meeting Gen. Musharraf and Mr. Jamali said "the country is fully capable of defending itself from foreign aggression. However, they stressed the need for internal unity to face external challenges''.
