Suspected case of SARS in Kochi

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI APRIL 10. An air passenger who returned from Doha was detained by health authorities here today as he exhibited symptoms of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Shaji Velayudhan, 27, hailing from Edathala near Aluva, who arrived at the Cochin International Airport, Nedumbassery, this morning, had reportedly been suffering from fever and cough.

On finding symptoms of respiratory track infection in him, the medical team screening the passengers at the airport sent Mr. Shaji to the Ernakulam General Hospital, where an isolation ward had been kept ready as part of the measures adopted by the health authorities to counter the SARS threat. The medical team decided to detain him especially because Doha had already reported cases of the disease.
