Sonia writes to Jaswant

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 10. The Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi, has written to the Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, suggesting re-examination of the level of duty to be levied on the powerloom industry.

Ms. Gandhi pointed out that she had received a number of petitions from the representatives of the garment and powerloom industry. ``The VAT and excise duty levied on the industry, close on the heels of the withdrawal of the SSI exemption, appears to have badly affected the small units in this sector,'' she said.
