The special unit had registered about half-a-dozen cases against the journalist, including one relating to the alleged murder of Bakthavatsalam, a student, by the forest brigand, Veerappan, a few years ago. A staff member of the publication, P. Mohan, said the journalist was coming out of the office around 8.30 p.m. when a team of police officials put Mr. Gopal in a car parked a few yards away. When the journalist wanted to know why he was being picked up, police said this could not be disclosed. He was later brought to the CB CID office. It was not immediately known in which case Mr. Gopal was being taken to the police office.
