Elite-B wins easily despite Yashpal's heroics

By Our Sports Reporter

CHENNAI APRIL 12. Plate-A lost seven wickets in wiping out its first innings deficit of 194 but the Hrishikesh Kanitkar-led side couldn't save the match. Elite-B, with Rohan Gavaskar at the helm, won the Duleep Trophy contest by nine wickets, 20 minutes before tea, on day three of the four-day final round match at the Chidambaram Stadium here on Saturday.

Elite-B pocketed eight points to finish the five-team round-robin league with 18. Plate-A, which got no points from this outing, ended with five.

Resuming at 74 for two, Plate-A lost Barrington Rowland at the overnight score in the day's second over. But Yashpal Singh (93, 174m, 119b, 11x4, 1x6) and Rajeev Kumar were up to the task, putting on 78 for the fourth wicket to take the side to 152 before the latter was bowled around his legs by leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule, who exploited the `rough' while operating from around the wicket at the pavilion end. In the same over, the Mumbai tweaker had new-man Thilak Naidu caught by lone slip, Wasim Jaffer.

A while later, Bahutule, who finished with four wickets (match haul of seven for 94), had left-hander Sunil Joshi caught at long-on. And when mediumpacer Harvinder Singh accounted for Dodda Ganesh, leg-before, in the first over of his second spell, the batting side went to lunch neck deep in trouble at seven for 194.

Yashpal missed a deserving century when he played on while trying to sweep Bahutule.

Needing 51, Elite-B lost Vinayak Mane off the very first delivery of the innings. But southpaw Amit Pagnis, who smashed five consecutive boundaries off Yohannan, and Wasim Jaffer got the runs in no time.
