In a press release, the BMTC Chairman, R. Devaraj, said the fare revision followed the increase in price of diesel from Rs. 21.80 a litre to Rs. 25.24 a litre from April 1. Besides, the State Government might announce a three per cent increase in DA rates for its employees. This would be effective from January 1 in the BMTC. The increase in diesel price was estimated to cost the BMTC an additional Rs. 148.6 crore a year. The additional expenditure due to the increased DA rate was Rs. 2.16 crore a year. Mr. Devaraj said the revision in fares would meet at least a portion of the increased cost of operation. There would be no change in the fare for the first two km. in blackboard, red-board, Pushpak, and Janapriya Vahini services. The fare would be higher by Re. 1 then onwards. The bus pass fare for City services has been increased from Rs. 240 to Rs. 270, for City and suburban services from Rs. 370 to Rs. 390, and for City, suburban, and Pushpak services from Rs. 410 to Rs. 430. Mr. Devaraj claimed that even after this increase, the bus fares in the City were lower than those in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
