Callieri, winner of a first career title two months ago in Acapulco, will hope to follow on from compatriot David Nalbandian. After a victory in the 2002 finale over Finn Jarkko Nieminen, Nalbandian rode a wave of form into the Wimbledon final and then the title indoors in Basel. Robredo's loss cooked Spanish chances for more success among the neighbours. For nine of the 13 editions at the Estadio Nacional, an Iberian has hauled away the trophy and winner's cheque, with only Thomas Muster (twice), Andrei Medvedev and Nalbandian breaking up the party.
Mahesh-Mirnyi pair triumphs
The top-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi clinched the doubles title defeating Lucas Arnold and Mariano Hood of Argentina 6-1, 6-2 in the final. After a tough start in the first round when the duo beat Alex Lopez Moron and David Sanchez of Spain 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), Mahesh and Mirnyi cruised to the title, winning the next three rornds for the loss of 12 games in all. It was the 27th career doubles title for Mahesh. The results: Singles: Semifinals: Men: Agustin Callieri bt Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-2; Nikolay Davydenko bt Max Mirnyi 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
