Wies guides Vasco to victory

Margao April 13. Three goals from Brazilian Rui Wanderely Wies guided title aspirant Vasco Sports Club to a 5-0 win over bottom-placed Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), Bangalore in the 20th round of the OIL PSU National Football League match played here at Nehru Stadium Fatorda on Sunday.

For the winner, the goals came from Wies in the 22nd, 41st and 90th minutes, Agnelo Gomes in 58th minute and Jules Alberto Dias in the 60th minute.

Vasco maintained its second position with 40 points registering 11 wins, seven draws and two defeats from 20 outings. Vasco will play its next match against East Bengal. ITI has seven points from 20 outings.

ITI made the first and only good move in the 10th minute and almost scored when Jaten Rai from the left flank passed to Mohammad Nazib, whose try missed the target narrowly.

After this Vasco took over and could have been in the lead in the 14th minute of the first half but the visitor goalkeeper Gumpe Rime brought off a fine save off a long ranger shot from Brazilian Wies.

Vasco shot into the lead in the 22nd minute through Wies, who after collecting a cross from Satish Minz, headed the ball into the net. Vasco continued to attack and had almost consolidated its lead in the 38th minute but Jules Alberto's header crashed into the crossbar following a flag kick taken by Minz.

Vasco increased its lead four minutes before the breather again through Wies. Jules Alberto, from the centre, gave a through pass to Wies, deceived Rime and placed the ball into the net.

After the break, Vasco maintained the tempo and pumped in three more goals. Vasco increased its lead in the 58th minute through Agnelo Gomes, when Rui Wanderely's free-kick hit one of the rival defenders and deflected towards Gomes, who pounced on the opportunity and pushed the ball into the net.

Jules Alberto Dias made it 4-0 after receiving a pass from Abhay Kumar. At the stroke of the whistle, Wies made it 5-0.
