Aussies moving towards victory

GEORGETOWN (GUYANA) April 13. Jason Gillespie, in a fiery burst of fast bowling, ran through the tail as the West Indians collapsed from a comfortable 381 for five to 398 all out. Gillespie claimed five for 39.

The Australians were left to chase 147 for victory in the first Test of Cable & Wireless series, here on Sunday.

Gillespie first trapped Vasbert Drakes in front for 14 before sending back Mervyn Dillon to a similar decision for no score.

Chanderpaul, who made the third fastest century in the first innings, was the next to go, again to Gillespie.

At lunch, Australia was 47 for no loss with Matthew Hayden (11) and Justin Langer (32) at the crease.

Lara, Ganga lead fightback

Earlier, Brian Lara, playing his first Test after being reinstated as West Indies captain, and Daren Ganga hit centuries as West Indies launched a brave fightback against Australia on Saturday.

The pair added 185 for the third wicket and steered the West Indies, a daunting 252 behind in the first innings, to 381 for five at close on the third day, 129 ahead.

Lara, who on taking the field was jeered by some parts of the Guyanese crowd unhappy at the sacking of their compatriot Carl Hooper after the World Cup, struck 20 fours in his innings of 110 before he was hit wicket to Brad Hogg with the score on 295.

The left-hander attempted one of his familiar sweep shots but missed, the ball hit his elbow and flew away but he clipped the leg stump with his bat on the follow through.

Lara's fellow Trinidadian Ganga, whose place in the team has been in danger after some unconvincing recent displays, atoned for the disappointment of Lara's dismissal by completing his maiden Test century in his first Caribbean series, shortly afterwards.

He survived an lbw appeal from Hogg on 96 after missing a looping full toss and three balls later drove the same bowler through the onside for four to complete his century.

Ganga was finally out for 113 when he hit a Lehmann delivery straight into the hands of Brett Lee at short mid-wicket.

West Indies also lost Marlon Samuels for seven in the final session on Saturday, caught at first slip by Ricky Ponting off Stuart MacGill.

Although the Australian bowlers managed to slow the Lara and Ganga partnership to 37 in the first hour after lunch, the West Indian pair broke loose before tea as it added another 85.

Ganga hit two fours in one MacGill over and in the next, deflected Bichel's delivery through the slips for four to bring up his 50.

Lara also found some fluent form, winning the crowd over with a flurry of fours to all parts of the ground and was given a rousing ovation when he swept a four through the covers to complete his 19th Test century.

Maher to join Aussie squad

Jimmy Maher will join the Australian team in the West Indies to give wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist a rest, the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) has announced.

ACB chairman of selectors, Trevor Hohns, said Maher would arrive in the Caribbean in time for Australia's match against a University of West Indies XI in Barbados, beginning on April 26.

Maher was a member of the Australian one-day team that won the World Cup in South Africa but missed out on the Test squad.

However, the Queensland captain was certain to make the Australian one-day squad to play West Indies as soon as the Test series was over.

``We are not necessarily saying that Jimmy is the country's second-best wicketkeeping option,'' Hohns said in a statement.

``But for this match we would rather introduce a player who is going to be with the team for the duration of the trip, rather than fly someone across for a few days.''

Hohns said Gilchrist, who is also a key batsman for both the Test and one-day teams, needed a short break after an exhausting schedule in recent months.

``It is important that we continue to monitor his workload and give him time-off where possible,'' Hohns said.

``He has had a long campaign and doesn't get many opportunities to rest, so we need to be conscious that he doesn't get over-worked and end up suffering from fatigue.''
